Who: From 1400 to 1600, European explorers discovered new lands, and trade routes, primarily by ship. The discoveries transformed European culture and advanced technologies throughout the world.
What: An exhibition in the Winchester College Treasury, including: numerous books from the Fellows' Library; navigational tools on loan from the History of Science Museum in Oxford; a small ship model; and ceramics, a fragment of a tapestry and earthenware to demonstrate the artefacts that explorers would have found, and later recreated.
When: Until the 16th of October, 14:00–16:00 (M,T,W,T,F,S,S) — there is no need to book.
Where: Winchester College Treasury (Gallery 1).
Why: The exhibition focuses not only on how the Age of Exploration happened, through navigational tools, but also on why it happened, by comparing European culture before and after. It also offers visitors to see some of the treasures of Winchester College up close.
