Exhibition — Watercolours from Winchester College

Who: Thomas Gainsborough, J.M.W. Turner, Richard Dadd, Joseph Wright of Derby, William Alexander, Paul Sandby, and Richard Baigent all painted watercolours in this exhibition. The painter of the Andwell Map from the 1530s, however, is unknown.

What: An exhibition in the Winchester College Treasury, including many watercolours, some of which have never been on public display before. You can see a selection pictured in this blog post.

When: Until 31 March 2023, 14:00–16:00 every day — there is no need to book and entry is free.

Where: Winchester College Treasury.

Why: Watercolours cannot be displayed permanently: light fades their colourful inks. Therefore, this is a rare opportunity to see so many of the College's watercolours in person. There is nothing comparable to seeing some, like Richard Dadd's Portrait Studies of Figures in Eastern Costume, in person.

How: You can learn more about the Treasury and visiting Winchester College here: winchestercollege.org/welcome/archives-libraries-treasury. If you are unable to visit the exhibition (or you really enjoyed it), then you can look at the objects in more detail online: winchestercollections.co.uk/?collection_cat=views-of-nature-four-centuries-of-watercolours-from-winchester-college-2022-23. There is a catalogue available to purchase from the Treasury.
