This watercolour is a recent personal acquisition, complementing this depiction of the Cenotaph. Watch the short video and read the article below to learn about it.
This watercolour painted by Maude Parker (and signed bottom left) depicts the Palace of Westminster from across the River Thames. Visibility is poor; we can only make out a rough outline of Barry and Pugin's immensely detailed building. This poor visibility — smog — and the boat presumably transporting goods up the river emphasises the industrial element of Britain's economy. The water looks polluted. This is a bleak picture, one that looks at the present with regret.
Born in Birmingham in 1888, Maude Parker lived in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Cornwall during her life. Notable for her watercolours, she exhibited at many galleries, including the Royal Academy.
