Montague Rendall, Headmaster of Winchester College, from 1911 to 1924, retired to Butley Priory, near Woodbridge in 1926. He stayed there for 24 years, remaining an influential figure in the country.
Rendall was one of the first five governors of the British Broadcasting Corporation, the BBC, from 1927 to 1932. He devised the BBC's motto, still used today, "nation shall speak peace unto nation", whilst in this role. The motto is an adaptation of Micah 4:3, "nation shall not lift up a sword against nation." Rendall also selected a direct biblical quotation for the entrance hall of Broadcasting House.
